Rescue efforts are ongoing in the inland Chinese province of Gansu in the wake of a major earthquake that has left at least 127 people dead and 20 unaccounted for. Chinese authorities say the magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred at about 11:59 p.m. local time in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu. The provincial government says 113 people in Gansu have been confirmed dead and 536 injured. It also says more than 155,000 buildings have been destroyed. The authorities of the neighboring province of Qinghai say 14 people have been confirmed dead and 198 injured. They say 20 people are missing after being hit by a landslide. Footage shows survivors gathering around a fire to warm themselves in the severe cold weather, with temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius. Electricity and water supplies have been disrupted. A state-run media outlet is reporting that more than 300 aftershocks have struck the area by Monday noon. The Chinese government has dispatched military personnel to support the rescue operation.
