Prospects dim for ceasefire as Israel, Hezbollah trade fire NHK

Israel and the Lebanon-based Shia Muslim group, Hezbollah, continue to attack one another, making prospects for a ceasefire uncertain.

The Israeli military said on Friday it had carried out airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in the Beirut area, including weapons manufacturing facilities. The military added it had also struck Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon.

A rocket attack by Hezbollah reportedly injured 11 people in the central Israeli town of Tira on Saturday.

Reuters news agency said Hezbollah launched a drone attack on Saturday against an airbase in southern Tel Aviv.

Efforts are underway to halt the fighting. On Thursday, US officials, including coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk, met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They are believed to have discussed a ceasefire proposal.

But Hezbollah maintains there has to be a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip before it agrees to a deal.
