Vendors at an iconic market in the quake-stricken city of Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, have reopened for business in their hometown for the first time since the New Year's Day earthquake. A massive fire that followed the quake burned much of the street where the Morning Market is held. Last month, some of the vendors set up a temporary market in the prefectural capital, Kanazawa City. On Saturday, other vendors who were not able to attend the temporary market sold their wares from the back of pickup trucks in the city of Wajima. Some also visited a temporary housing complex near the morning market street where quake evacuees were able to purchase freshly harvested vegetables. A woman in her 70s said she was glad to see the vendors brimming with vigor. Another woman in her 60s said it's good that she can get fresh vegetables and help the vendors by buying their produce. A vegetable seller at the market, Mizuguchi Yoshiko, said she felt invigorated for the first time in three months, and that it was a good opportunity to meet customers again and make sure they are all right. She said she wants to grow other vegetables that she can sell on a regular basis.
