US social media service giant Meta has announced that it will launch a microblogging service that could take on Twitter. The operator of Facebook and Instagram says the new service called Threads will debut on Thursday. Instagram users are expected to be able to log in to Threads with their existing account. Meta says Threads will be available in more than 30 languages including English, Japanese and Chinese. Meta is launching the service as turmoil continues at Twitter since billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk took over the company. Musk drew fresh criticism from users with an announcement on Saturday that he is limiting the number of tweets they can view per day. He argues that the measure is intended to prevent unauthorized collection of data.
