US President Donald Trump is set to discuss a ceasefire deal in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a conference call starting on Tuesday morning, Eastern time. The phone talks would be their first since they agreed to start negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine on February 12. Trump is expected to urge Putin to accept the US-proposed 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine has already agreed to. Trump has proposed the two leaders will also discuss what to do with Russian-occupied eastern and southern areas of Ukraine. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is now occupied by Russia, would also be on the agenda. There have been concerns about radioactive material dispersal from the plant. Putin has indicated he does not fully agree with the US plan. He said, "A ceasefire should be made in such a way that it would lead to long-term peace and eliminate the original roots of this crisis." He has also stressed that the Russian military has advantages on the battlefield. The focus will be on whether Trump can persuade Putin to make some concessions toward a ceasefire.
