Residents of northern Philippines brace for Typhoon Mawar NHK

Residents of Luzon Island in the northern Philippines are trying to ensure their safety as powerful Typhoon Mawar approaches.

The country's disaster management officials say the approaching typhoon is not likely to make landfall on northern Luzon. They say they have not received any reports of major damage.

A total of 109 elementary and junior high schools have canceled classes, while 32 mostly domestic flights have been or will be canceled by Tuesday.
