Philippine Supreme Court throws out Vice President Duterte's impeachment NHK

A: Hey there! Heard anything interesting lately?

B: Not really, just the usual stuff. What's up?

A: Well, you know Sara Duterte, right? The Vice President here in Japan?

B: Yeah, I remember her name. But what about her now?

A: So, she was impeached by the House of Representatives a while ago. They accused her of threatening the President and misusing public funds.

B: Whoa! That's serious! What happened next?

A: Well, the Senate impeachment court was supposed to meet about it next month. But guess what? The Philippine Supreme Court ruled that the impeachment was unconstitutional!

B: No way! So she's not in trouble anymore?

A: Not exactly. They didn't clear her of the charges, but they said the impeachment wasn't legal. Her defense team is happy about it because it upholds the rule of law.

B: Interesting... I wonder what this means for her future in politics.

A: Exactly! This decision could help her run for the presidency in 2028, if she wants to! Isn't that exciting?

The Philippine Supreme Court has struck down impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte, ruling they were unconstitutional.

The House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress, impeached Duterte in February, accusing her of threatening to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and of misusing public funds. Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, denies the allegations.

The Senate impeachment court had been expected to convene as early as next month.

But the Supreme Court on Friday unanimously declared the impeachment unconstitutional, while stressing it was not absolving Duterte of the charges.

Her defense team welcomed the decision, saying it upheld the rule of law. The ruling could boost Duterte's political ambitions -- including a possible run for the presidency in 2028.
