US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel has stressed that Washington will continue to support Ukraine, in cooperation with Japan and other countries. Emanuel and Ukraine's Ambassador to Japan, Sergiy Korsunsky, held a joint news conference in Tokyo on Wednesday, ahead of the two-year mark of Russia's invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24, 2022. The US ambassador said Ukrainian people stand at the front lines but they do not stand alone. Emanuel added that the people of the United States and Japan, as well as in the West and across the Indo-Pacific region, "stand with those who want to be part of the benefits that freedom offers." A reporter asked the ambassador about the US Congress having yet to pass a bill to send additional aid to Ukraine amid partisan divisions. Emanuel expressed expectations that the House of Representatives will follow the Senate in approving the bill, saying that the House, in a bipartisan fashion, will not abandon the people of Ukraine. Ukraine's ambassador said that with bipartisan support and the strong leadership of US President Joe Biden, Ukrainians are sure "this difficult time will pass" and their country will receive support. Asked about the possibility of a ceasefire, Korsunsky ruled out negotiations for now, saying Russia's goal is to "destroy Ukraine as a country, Ukrainians as a nation, our culture, our language, and take over our 1000 years" of history.
