Taiwan president to visit Africa's Eswatini next month NHK

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen will visit the African country of Eswatini next month.

Eswatini, almost entirely surrounded by South Africa, is the only country in the region with which Taiwan has diplomatic ties.

Taiwan's presidential office says Tsai's trip is scheduled from September 5 through 8. Tsai will hold a meeting with King Mswati III. She will also attend a ceremony marking the 55th anniversary of the country's independence, as well as visit a local hospital to which Taiwan has provided support.

The office says Tsai will fly directly to and from the African nation.

While China is accelerating its efforts to expand its influence over Africa, Eswatini has maintained diplomatic relations with Taiwan since gaining independence.

Taiwan's economic affairs minister will accompany Tsai on her visit. Taiwan appears to be aiming to strengthen bilateral ties by initiating economic cooperation projects with Eswatini.
