About 1.12 million people in Japan, or less than one percent of the overall population, will celebrate New Year's Day as new adults at the age of 18. Japan lowered the legal age of adulthood from 20 to 18 in April, when the revised Civil Code came into effect. Based on the revision, the internal affairs ministry for the first time has announced the number of new adults at the age of 18, instead of 20, as of New Year's Day. The ministry estimates that as of January 1, there will be about 570,000 men and about 540,000 women at the age of 18 in the country. There will be 1.13 million 19-year-olds and 1.17 million 20-year-olds. Compared with the 2022 figure, the number of 20-year-olds in 2023 will be down 60,000, making the tally a new record low since taking the statistics began in 1968.
