A Japanese government survey shows that the number of households with unmarried minors in the country has fallen below 20 percent for the first time. The health and welfare ministry conducted the survey in June last year and about 204,000 households responded. The survey shows that the number of households with an unmarried child or children under the age of 18 is estimated at 9,917,000, falling below 10 million for the first time. The number of such households was 18.3 percent of the total, dropping below 20 percent for the first time. The survey also analyzed the percentage of households with people aged 65 or older. In an estimated 31.2 percent of all households, people aged 65 or older either live by themselves, or live with unmarried minors under 18. The percentage has risen above 30 percent for the first time. The ministry says that the new figures reflect the continued decline in the number of births in Japan, where the total fell below 800,000, last year.
