The Israeli military has struck strongholds of the Islamic group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It says the move was in response to a violation of the ceasefire agreement by Hamas.
The military announced on Sunday that Hamas had fired an anti-tank missile and gunshots toward its troops in southern Gaza. It reported that two of its soldiers had been killed.
In a statement, Hamas denied that it was involved in the attacks.
The Israeli military stated, "Over the past few hours, in response to the blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement earlier today , the IDF struck dozens of Hamas terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip." It said the targets included weapons storage facilities and multiple infrastructure sites that were underground.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz posted a message on social media. He wrote, "Hamas will pay a heavy price for every shooting and violation of the ceasefire, and if the message is not understood, the intensity of the reactions will increase."
Palestinian media outlets have reported that at least two Palestinians, including a journalist, were killed in an Israeli drone attack in central Gaza.
They have also reported that a woman was killed and several other people were injured in an Israeli drone strike in southern Gaza. Most of those injured were apparently children.
Health authorities in Gaza said on Sunday that 35 people have been killed since the ceasefire took effect on October 10. They noted that the death toll has now surpassed 68,000.
Hamas has strongly condemned Israel for carrying out the attacks. The group has described the strikes as violations of the agreement.
