An international human rights organization has accused Myanmar's military of using cluster munitions against ethnic minority groups. It is calling on the international community to launch an investigation. Fighting between the military and ethnic minority militants has been escalating since the 2021 coup. Amnesty international released a statement on Thursday. It said that the military has carried out indiscriminate attacks against civilians. It noted that the junta conducted a nighttime airstrike in northern Shan State early in December. The human rights organization said it is likely that cluster munitions were used in the assault. The organization released a video showing a series of detonations. An armed ethnic group said that the attack killed one civilian and injured five. Three armed ethnic groups launched a coordinated assault against the junta in the state this October. Fighting has been intensifying since that time. The UN says reports suggest more than 300 civilians have been killed. The use of cluster munitions is banned under an international convention, due to the risks they pose to civilians. But Myanmar has not signed the agreement. The international community is becoming increasingly concerned about the military's use of the lethal weapons.
