Israeli strikes across Gaza Strip reportedly kill at least 43 NHK

Israel has unleashed airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, including a humanitarian zone sheltering displaced residents. Reuters news agency says the attacks left at least 43 people dead.

The Israeli military said on Thursday that it had conducted "an intelligence-based strike" on the humanitarian area in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

The military said the attack had eliminated the head of a Hamas unit that carried out "violent interrogations" of people in the territory.

It added that numerous steps had been taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians.

But Reuters quotes medics as saying the attack on the humanitarian zone killed 11 people, including women and children.

The strike on Khan Younis damaged a building housing local authorities. Video filmed by a crew of NHK's Gaza office shows wounded people being rushed into a hospital.

Meanwhile, an Arab media outlet says a Hamas delegation visited Egypt on Wednesday to move forward with negotiations on a ceasefire in Gaza. Egypt is one of the countries that have brokered talks between Israel and Hamas.

But a US newspaper cites Arab mediators as saying ceasefire talks "have hit an impasse in recent days."
