Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to start a new six-year term as president on Tuesday. Putin, who triumphed in a presidential election held last March, is being sworn in at an inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin in Moscow. Since being elected president for the first time in 2000, Putin has held power either as president or prime minister for more than 20 years. His fifth term will last until 2030. He is expected to prioritize the country's ongoing invasion of Ukraine in opposition to Western countries, while boosting control and stabilizing his political base at home. At a meeting with Cabinet ministers on Monday, Putin referred to sanctions and other efforts aimed at destroying Russia from within, both politically and economically. He noted that such efforts have not succeeded, and expressed gratitude to the Russian leadership for their cooperation. Russian media reports say the new Cabinet lineup is expected to remain almost unchanged as the Ukraine invasion is ongoing. Attention is now focused on the speech Putin is scheduled to deliver at a Victory Day ceremony on Thursday. The day commemorates the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two.
