East Japan Railway, or JR East, is to install multi-purpose coin lockers at its stations where people can receive packages.
Their introduction could help reduce the burden on delivery companies struggling with a shortage of drivers.
JR East demonstrated the coin lockers to the media on Monday, one day ahead of the start of the service.
Officials said people will be able to use them to receive goods purchased online in addition to luggage storage. The company also plans to introduce a service in which packages placed in the locker will be sent out to designated locations.
An official of JR East's logistics subsidiary said that customers will be able to pick up their packages with a minimal loss of time as they go about their daily lives.
The number of home deliveries has multiplied due to the growth of online shopping. More than 10 percent of packages need to be redelivered because the recipients are not home.
JR East plans to set up the lockers at about 1,000 locations in greater Tokyo over the next three years.
