Prices in Japan for more than 1,900 food items to rise in June NHK

A: Hey there! Did you hear the latest news?
B: Not yet, what's up?

A: Japan's food makers are planning to increase prices on more than 1,900 items in June!
B: Whoa, really?! What kind of stuff we're talking about?

A: Everything from seasonings, like spices and broth products, to processed foods, like instant noodles, seaweed, pre-cooked rice, and even dairy products.
B: That's a lot! So why are they doing this?

A: They say it's due to rising costs for materials and production, including higher utility fees.
B: I see... And I guess this isn't the first time they're doing this, right?

A: Actually, they've announced price hikes on more than 16,000 items by October this year, which is about 30% higher compared to last year.
B: Wow! That sounds like a lot. And the total number for the whole year might go over 20,000 for the first time in two years.

A: Exactly! With costs for materials, distribution, energy, and labor all going up, manufacturers are struggling to keep up.

Private research firm Teikoku Databank says a survey of 195 major domestic food companies reveals price hikes are planned for 1,932 items in June.
