A: Hey there! Did you hear the latest news? B: Not yet, what's up? A: Japan's food makers are planning to increase prices on more than 1,900 items in June! B: Whoa, really?! What kind of stuff we're talking about? A: Everything from seasonings, like spices and broth products, to processed foods, like instant noodles, seaweed, pre-cooked rice, and even dairy products. B: That's a lot! So why are they doing this? A: They say it's due to rising costs for materials and production, including higher utility fees. B: I see... And I guess this isn't the first time they're doing this, right? A: Actually, they've announced price hikes on more than 16,000 items by October this year, which is about 30% higher compared to last year. B: Wow! That sounds like a lot. And the total number for the whole year might go over 20,000 for the first time in two years. A: Exactly! With costs for materials, distribution, energy, and labor all going up, manufacturers are struggling to keep up. ---------------- Food makers in Japan are set to raise the prices for more than 1,900 items next month. Private research firm Teikoku Databank says a survey of 195 major domestic food companies reveals price hikes are planned for 1,932 items in June. Seasonings, including spices and broth products, account for the largest number by category at 962. This is followed by 755 processed food items, such as instant noodles, seaweed and pre-cooked rice, and 106 dairy products, including yoghurt and cream. The research firm says the price hikes are attributed to surging material costs as well as rising production costs due to higher utility fees. This year, food makers have announced price hikes of more than 16,000 items by October. That's about 30 percent higher than the figure for 2024. Teikoku Databank says the number for the entire year is likely to top 20,000 for the first time in two years. It says manufacturers are under persistent pressure to raise prices, against the backdrop of surging costs for materials, distribution, energy and labor.
