The police initially received an emergency call at around 4:25 p.m. about a stabbing in the area. They have warned local residents that a man possessing "a knife or a firearm" remains on the loose.
The four injured — one woman and three men — were either stabbed or shot, according to Shin-etsu Broadcasting, a local outlet. NHK reported that two of the injured were police officers.
According to the local fire department, a woman in her 40s who was apparently stabbed in the back was rushed to a hospital in the city of Nagano while a man was also transported to a hospital in Nakano, NHK reported.
“I heard sirens from ambulances and police cars,” said a store employee near the site. “There was an announcement via a loudspeaker calling on people to stay indoors because there was a shotgun shooting.”
