At least four people were injured, including two police officers, after a shooting and stabbing Thursday in Nakano, Nagano Prefecture, with a male suspect fleeing the scene and holing himself up at a home in the city, local media reported, citing the Nagano Prefectural Police.

According to NHK citing police sources, the man was wearing camouflage clothing, a cap, sunglasses and a mask.

Residents have been advised not to leave home for nonurgent reasons, and children still at local elementary and junior high schools were told to shelter in place.

The police initially received an emergency call at around 4:25 p.m. about a stabbing in the area. They have warned local residents that a man possessing "a knife or a firearm" remains on the loose.

The four injured — one woman and three men — were either stabbed or shot, according to Shin-etsu Broadcasting, a local outlet. NHK reported that two of the injured were police officers.

According to the local fire department, a woman in her 40s who was apparently stabbed in the back was rushed to a hospital in the city of Nagano while a man was also transported to a hospital in Nakano, NHK reported.

“I heard sirens from ambulances and police cars,” said a store employee near the site. “There was an announcement via a loudspeaker calling on people to stay indoors because there was a shotgun shooting.”

A video feed on NHK’s website showed police officers wearing face shields and holding shields as they patrolled the area.
