Junior high school students in Mito, north of Tokyo, have presented the outcome of their discussions on how to create a safer world to interior and security ministers from the Group of Seven nations. The students delivered the presentation in English on Sunday on the sidelines of the ministers' meeting in the city. About 2,000 students in Mito gathered last month to discuss what is necessary to ensure safety in everyday life, and drew up a six-point declaration. It includes a pledge to think morally and critically about information in order to judge and present it correctly. They also vow to learn from the past disasters and research how to prepare for future emergencies. The presentation was greeted with applause. The students and ministers exchanged high-fives. One student said she was nervous about speaking in English in front of the ministers, but she learned a lot from the experience. She added that she will make sure to be careful when using social media.
