In Guatemala, a candidate from a center-left party has won the presidential election runoff. He has said he hopes to expand economic relations with China, while maintaining diplomatic ties with Taiwan. In Sunday's runoff, Bernardo Arevalo of the Seed Movement party beat former First Lady Sandra Torres, who is from another center-left party, the National Unity of Hope. In the first-round election in June, Arevalo was in second place, but he won nearly 60 percent of valid votes in the runoff. He is the son of Guatemala's first democratically elected president. Arevalo gained support through his campaign pledges of eliminating political corruption and restoring public safety. Guatemala is one of the few countries to have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. In a radio interview in June, Arevalo said that he would like to keep diplomatic ties with Taiwan and also strengthen economic relations with China. After declaring victory in a news conference on Sunday, Arevalo said that his country will not choose between Taiwan and China, but will cooperate with both.
