Trump again calls for US to own Greenland NHK

US media say President-elect Donald Trump has again called for the United States to own Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

Trump released a statement on Sunday announcing his choice for US ambassador to Denmark.

He also said, "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."

Most of Greenland is in the Arctic Circle, where China and Russia have been stepping up their activities. The island also hosts a US military base.

During his first term as US president, Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland, calling it strategically attractive. That ignited a backlash from Denmark.

The Associated Press has quoted the head of Greenland's autonomous government, Mute Bourup Egede, as saying: "Greenland is ours. We are not for sale."

Earlier, Trump suggested he would demand a return of the Panama Canal, a vital transportation channel in Central America, saying Panama charges US ships "exorbitant" rates to pass through the waterway.

The Panamanian government protested his remarks.
