An international trade show featuring cutting-edge semiconductor technologies has opened in Tokyo. About 960 companies and organizations from Japan and around the world are taking part. The annual three-day event lasts through Friday. Sony Semiconductor Solutions is holding demonstrations of its new image sensors. It says they can be used for a variety of purposes, including to inspect the inside of food containers. The company says it used its own technology to produce the compact, high-resolution sensors. Precision processing machine maker Disco is showcasing a device that can slice silicon wafers to a thickness of less than five one-hundredths of a millimeter. Startups are also taking part in the exhibition. They are trying to attract students and other young people to work in the chip business. A growing number of semiconductor plants is being built in Japan, but the industry faces a shortage of engineers.
