Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is mulling possible responses to a money scandal that has engulfed lawmakers of the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party. They include replacing Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu.

Sources say Matsuno's office may have received more than 10 million yen, or about 69,000 dollars, in kickbacks from selling tickets for political fundraising events. The payments were allegedly made over a five-year period through last year. The office is suspected of failing to declare the revenue in its political funds report.

There is a growing view within the party that Matsuno's resignation is inevitable. Some members say the scandal could hinder his work as a core member of the Cabinet, possibly affecting the management of the government.

The offices of some other LDP lawmakers face similar allegations. They include LDP Diet Affairs Chief Takagi Tsuyoshi and the party's Upper House secretary general Seko Hiroshige.

Some government and party officials are beginning to suggest the need for Cabinet and party leadership reshuffles.

Kishida is expected to carefully consider his options. Prosecutors are believed to be considering questioning lawmakers after the current Diet session closes on Wednesday. The compilation of the draft budget for the next fiscal year is entering the final stage.
