Fireworks competition in Tsuchiura draws large crowd NHK

A fireworks competition featuring pyro-technicians from across Japan was held on Saturday in Tsuchiura city, north of Tokyo.

The 92nd Tsuchiura All-Japan Fireworks Competition was held on the banks of the Sakuragawa River in Ibaraki Prefecture.

This year 57 fireworks firms took part. About 20,000 fireworks lit up the nighttime sky.

The competition had three divisions: Size 10 shells that are designed to form a beautiful sphere; Starmines, a series of fireworks ignited in rapid succession; and Original Display, a competition of original designs.

The organizing committee also presented a firework design named, The Grandeur of Tsuchiura Fireworks.
It lasted for about 7 minutes with about 2,300 exploding shells.

Pyro-technicians expressed hope that people will prosper despite continuing disasters and conflicts in Japan and abroad.

Tsuchiura City officials say an estimated 600,000 spectators turned out to enjoy the fireworks.

One woman from Chiba Prefecture who brought her 6-year-old son said it was their first time to witness such a spectacular event.
