Many economies in Southeast Asia saw strong growth in the October-to-December quarter. But the business outlook in the region is now clouded by US plans to raise tariffs on imports. Vietnam's GDP grew 7.5 percent in real terms from a year earlier. The gain was led by exports of computers and related products to the US. Malaysia's economy expanded 5 percent on robust exports of semiconductors. Thailand experienced slower domestic auto sales, but still grew 3.2 percent. The Philippines advanced 5.2 percent. Indonesia and Singapore both gained 5 percent. Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand have all increased exports to the US in recent years. That suggests plans by the administration of US President Donald Trump to hike tariffs could lead to tough trade talks.
