A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Saturday. A 64-centimeter tsunami was observed in the area, but the Philippine authorities say they have not confirmed any injuries so far. The US Geological Survey says the earthquake was recorded off Mindanao at 2:37 p.m. UTC on Saturday. It occurred at a depth of 32 kilometers. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology called on residents along a part of the coast of Mindanao Island to evacuate to higher ground, as it expected tsunami. The institute says that a tsunami of 64 centimeters was observed at a remote island in Surigao del Sur Province, 18 centimeters in Bislig in the same province and 8 centimeters in Mati in Davao Oriental Province. Police at Surigao de Sur near the epicenter say that power has been out since shortly after the quake. They say that many residents have evacuated to public buildings. Philippine authorities say so far there are no reports of injuries or major damage. But they are collecting more information as tremors with a magnitude 5 to 6 continue to occur.
