US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has left China after meeting with the country's top leaders. During the series of talks, the US and China confirmed that they will continue dialogue, but failed to come to an agreement on resuming communication channels between their militaries. On Monday, Blinken wrapped up his two-day visit to China, during which he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, top diplomat Wang Yi and President Xi Jinping. Blinken was the first member of President Joe Biden's cabinet to visit the country. Xi told Blinken that Beijing "hopes to see a sound and steady China-US relationship," according to the Chinese foreign ministry. Xi also stressed that China "believes that the two major countries can overcome various difficulties and find the right way to get along." Speaking to reporters, Blinken acknowledged that there are many issues on which the US and China "profoundly, even vehemently disagree." But he stressed that Washington and Beijing recognize the need to stabilize bilateral relations. During Blinken's stay in China, both sides pledged to continue dialogue and agreed to arrange a visit by Foreign Minister Qin to Washington at a mutually suitable time. Regarding the proposal to resume military-to-military communication channels, which Washington considers crucial to avoiding unintended clashes, Blinken says China didn't agree to move forward.
