A new report illustrates the devastating effect of landmines in Myanmar. They killed or injured more people in the Southeast Asian country last year than anywhere else. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines says there were at least 1,003 casualties in Myanmar. That's worse than Syria, which topped the grim ranking for the previous three years, and Ukraine. Myanmar is riddled with conflict. Many supporters of democracy have taken up arms against the junta, which seized power in 2021. The report says landmines are being used by both sides, and armed ethnic groups. It also says evidence shows the military has used civilians as so-called "guides", forced to walk ahead of troops in areas littered with mines.
