Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his defense minister to enhance the military's strength, apparently to help carry on the fight in Ukraine. Putin met on Friday with Sergei Shoigu, who gave a report on the partial mobilization of reservists. Putin noted that although much has been done, such as building up the Navy, there is more to do. He said, "We need to review and make adjustments in developing all the components of the Armed Forces, including the Ground Forces." He also instructed Shoigu to make the needed decisions quickly. The president also stressed the importance of equipment and training to give confidence to personnel engaged in combat operations. He is seen to be trying to appease public concern that soldiers have been forced into battle without sufficient training or equipment. Putin acknowledged Shoigu's earlier remark that there were certain problems and difficulties in the first stage of the mobilization. The president also confirmed with Shoigu that about 41,000 personnel are actually active in combat units and the rest are still being trained. Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that Putin was trying to ease anxiety among the public.
