Russia continues attacks on Ukraine into new year NHK

Russia's military continued to attack cities in Ukraine into the new year. The Ukrainian military says it intercepted 45 Iranian-made drones sent by Russia from late Saturday through early Sunday.

Officials of the capital Kyiv used social media to report that drone debris hit a vehicle.

The governor of the Kyiv region, Oleksiy Kuleba, said Russian drone attacks targeted energy facilities and damaged an infrastructure facility.

The deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, said in a social media post that Russian shelling in the southern region of Kherson killed one person and damaged a children's hospital.

US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink tweeted that Russia "coldly and cowardly" attacked Ukraine in the early hours of the new year. She said America is absolutely confident Ukraine will prevail in 2023.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko says Russian strikes on the city on Saturday killed one person and wounded 20 others, including a Japanese journalist.

Russia's defense ministry said on Sunday its New Year's Eve attacks targeted Ukraine's drone production. The ministry claimed that it had managed to thwart Kyiv's terror attacks against Russia in the near future.

The statement may indicate that the two attacks on an air base in southern Russia last month, apparently using drones sent by Ukraine, increased Moscow's wariness of Ukrainian capabilities.
