Japan's Meteorological Agency calls on residents to be on the alert for possible earthquakes with similar intensities to the jolts that hit Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday evening.
An agency official told a news conference on the same day that people in areas that had strong tremors should pay attention to seismic activity and rain as the risk of falling rocks and landslides has risen.
The official also said residents should be on the alert over the next week for possible quakes with intensities of around upper 5 on Japan's scale of zero to 7. The official added that strong jolts may occur especially over the next two or three days.
The agency says that in an earthquake with an intensity of upper 5, many people would have difficulty walking without holding something stable.
It says tableware and books may fall off shelves, and unstable items such as unfixed furniture may fall over. Outside homes, block walls made of unreinforced concrete may collapse, and window glass may shatter and fall.
Cracks and liquefaction may occur in the ground. On slopes, rocks may fall down and landslides may occur.
People are advised to stay away from anything that could fall over and from dangerous places such as cliffs.
