'Godzilla Minus One' wins Best Picture at Japan Academy awards NHK

The Best Picture prize at this year's Japan Academy awards has gone to "Godzilla Minus One". The ceremony took place on Friday in Tokyo.

The latest title in the long-running franchise sees the giant monster unleash chaos in post-war Japan.

Director Yamazaki Takashi dedicated the win to all the staff and cast, and also Godzilla.

The film has also been nominated in the Visual Effects category at the US Academy Awards on Sunday.

The Best Director prize at the Japan Academy awards went to Wim Wenders for "Perfect Days." The German becomes the first foreigner to win the category.

Actor Yakusho Koji was named best lead actor for his depiction of a humble toilet cleaner in the film.

Yakusho received Wenders' prize on the director's behalf.

The actor said he is sure the filmmaker would be delighted, because he loves Japan and the Japanese people.

"Perfect Days" is also nominated for an Oscar in the International Feature Film category.
