South Korean president visits shipyard in US, reaffirms industry ties NHK

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has visited a shipyard in the United States to underscore his country's efforts to boost bilateral ties in the shipbuilding sector.

Lee toured the shipyard in the state of Pennsylvania on Tuesday. It was acquired by a South Korean company in December last year. The country has a competitive edge in shipbuilding.

To coincide with his visit, a christening ceremony was held for the first ship to be completed since the acquisition.

Lee said South Korea's shipbuilding industry will take on a new challenge to help strengthen US maritime security and rejuvenate the American shipbuilding sector.

When South Korea reached a trade agreement with the US last month, it announced that it will earmark 150 billion dollars to boost cooperation with the country in shipbuilding.

During Monday's summit in Washington, Lee and US President Donald Trump confirmed the cooperation.
