BRICS announced on Monday that Indonesia, which is Southeast Asia's largest population and economy, is formally joining the group as a full member. With nations such as Russia, India, and China already participating, the group is expanding with its first entry of a Southeast Asian country. Brazil, which holds the bloc's presidency in 2025, welcomed Indonesia's membership, saying that the country shares support for the reform of global governance institutions and the deepening of cooperation in the Global South. Indonesia's foreign ministry stressed the significance, saying it reflects Indonesia's increasing active role in global issues, as well as its commitment to strengthen multilateral cooperation for a more inclusive and equitable global order. BRICS has recently expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. A number of Southeast Asian nations are also showing interest in joining the bloc.
