Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen attends Guatemalan coffee event in Taipei NHK

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has attended an event to taste Guatemalan coffee. The Central American nation has diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Tsai visited a cafe in central Taipei on Wednesday along with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei who is visiting Taiwan.

Speaking in front of many journalists, Tsai said the coffee she had was very tasty.

Coffee is one of Guatemala's main agricultural products. The mother of President Giammattei is said to be from a coffee farming family.

Guatemalan coffee amounts to only 2 percent of the global output, but it has a market share of more than 10 percent in Taiwan.

The event was organized as Guatemala aims to increase its coffee exports. It is also seen as an attempt by Taiwan to shore up ties with the Central American nation when other countries in the region have severed ties with Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with China.
