3 school girls in Kyushu dead after playing in river with friends NHK

Police say three elementary school girls were declared dead after being pulled from a river in Fukuoka Prefecture's Miyawaka City, southwestern Japan.

Police received a call from a girl at about 0:50 p.m. on Friday, telling them that her friends had not come back from playing in the Inunaki River.

Rescue personnel from the fire department and police pulled the three girls from the river at about 1:30 p.m. Police say they were taken to hospital where they were confirmed dead.

Fire officials said the three girls are sixth graders. They added that children at the site said they were playing in a group of eight.

The river is about 40 meters wide near the Nishiki bridge, close to where the girls were discovered. The officials say rescuers found them on the river bottom in water 2.5 to 3 meters deep.

Authorities are looking into the incident in detail.
