US Defense Department Press Secretary Pat Ryder has said "Our hearts are with the Japanese people" after Monday's powerful earthquake in the Noto Peninsula. Ryder said on Thursday, "We remain in close communication with the Government of Japan and we do stand ready to aid in any way that would be most helpful to Japan." He also said the US forces in Japan are in regular contact with the Japanese government to discuss how they might help, should assistance be requested.
