Hawaii Governor Josh Green says the death toll from the Maui wildfires has risen to 110. Green was speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, just over a week after wind-fanned flames tore across the island, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Green said search teams have so far scoured 38 percent of the affected areas. He said authorities have added more people and search dogs to the effort, and enlisted additional experts to help assess DNA in a bid to identify the dead. Green said that on Wednesday he received a message from President Joe Biden promising hundreds of millions of dollars in additional support from the federal government for the recovery effort, which he said would be long and costly. He said that about 2,000 people are still without power, and promised them the same support offered to residents who have lost their homes. Green also said that many hotel rooms have been made available to affected residents, and added that his government is now making plans for a long-haul reconstruction effort.
