The Islamabad High Court in Pakistan has suspended a corruption conviction and three-year prison sentence for former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The court also granted him bail on Tuesday. A trial court in the capital earlier this month convicted Khan for not disclosing gifts he received from foreign governments and leaders during his premiership from 2018 to 2022. He denied the charges and appealed to a higher court. Khan is still in jail, as he faces numerous allegations after losing a vote of confidence in the parliament in April last year. But he remains a key opposition figure with strong support, as the country struggles with security problems, political unrest and a high level of inflation. In May, Khan's supporters protested nationwide. His party members took to the streets and clashed with police. The country's election committee has barred Khan from running for office for five years. He repeatedly rejects the allegations against him, claiming the government is trying to stop him from contesting elections. General elections are scheduled for November at the latest, but the election committee has yet to set the date.
