Myanmar's junta holds annual military parade NHK

Myanmar's ruling military has staged a large-scale parade in the capital Naypyitaw, which comes as the junta continues to struggle in fierce fighting inside the country.

The military marked the annual Armed Forces Day by showcasing its power, with large numbers of soldiers and weaponry on display.

Representatives from nations with close ties to Myanmar also joined the ceremony, including Russia and China.

The junta seized power in a coup in 2021. It has been embroiled in a prolonged battle with pro-democracy forces and ethnic minority groups. It has reportedly been losing ground in border areas in the eastern and western parts of the country.

A local human rights group says over 6,400 civilians and pro-democracy activists have died in the conflict. The United Nations estimates over 3 million people have been displaced.
